From 1 October 2026, Japan Rail Pass prices rise again (about 5–6% on many adult tickets sold via overseas agents). Is it still worth buying? Use your itinerary—not the headline hike—to decide.
What is changing
This is another increase after the large 2023 jump. Overseas agent / designated counter prices move up; always re-check the official reservation site for the latest freeze/exception notes.
When the pass can still win
- Multi-city loops with shinkansen (e.g. Tokyo–Kyoto–Osaka plus side trips)
- Several long JR hops inside the validity window
When point-to-point is better
- Mostly one city + day trips on metros/private railways
- Heavy use of non-JR lines the pass does not cover
How to decide quickly
- List each long JR segment and sum individual fares
- Compare with pass price for your duration (7/14/21)
- Add activation date so expensive days fall inside the window
After the 2026 bump, the pass is less of an auto-buy—but on a shinkansen-heavy itinerary it can still save money. Run the fare math once before you purchase.
